TOPIC: Seeing Through the FOG of Senior Resources

Ms Leidheiser's presentation covered senior resources in the Richmond, Chesterfield, Powhatan, Goochland and Henrico area.


The July 2014 meeting was held at Bosher Auditorium with a good crowd for a day that had intense July heat in the Richmond area. Ms. Leidheiser talked about the explosive growth of people aged 50 and older in the Richmond metro area, and how this growth is expected to increase as more people come to live in the Richmond area.

Debbie Leidheiser spoke about the abundance of Senior programs available in the Richmond Metro area. Some of the topics covered in Debbie's presentation:

  1. Employment programs for Seniors
  2. Computer training for seniors in the Richmond area
  3. The "Yollow-Dot" program "File of Life" program
  4. Foster Grandparent programs to assist school-age children
  5. Support programs in Richmond area for help seniors to age in their homes even when they require various forms of assistance
  6. Home-based help to enable seniors to take care of common household tasks
  7. Transportation programs for seniors
  8. Community events that are tailored specifically for seniors in the Richmond area
  9. Financial help for seniors
  10. Program providing simple repair work for seniors' homes
  11. Telephone contact systems - volunteers regularly phone seniors to check on them and their needs
  12. Grandparent support groups for older individuals raising grandchildren alone
  13. Faith based resources in the Richmond area
  14. Elder friends program: social events for seniors in the Richmond area
  15. Senior ambassador program
  16. The "Super Senior Program"
  17. The EMS Passport Program
  18. Better Business Bureau assistance for Seniors
